Grays' Cooksey loses fight against cancer
GRAYS Athletic midfielder Ernie Cooksey died in the early hours of this morning following a battle against cancer.
The 28-year-old player had developed a form of skin cancer and was diagnosed with a recurrence of a malignant melanoma in February 2008.
A spokesman for the Blue Square Premier club said: "Ernie will always be fondly remembered by all those who he came in contact with.
"On the pitch Ernie always gave 100 per cent and was a true gentleman off the pitch, he always found time to talk with his fans and has made many friends throughout his career.
"He will be greatly missed by all.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Ernies partner Louise and family at this sad time."
Cooksey joined Grays in July 2007 on a two-year contract.
His career started at Crawley Town and he also played for Oldham Athletic, Rochdale and Boston United.
