Broom sweeps up double signing
BILLERICAY Town joint boss Jason Broom could not hide his delight after snapping up vastly-experienced defender Tim Cole from Thurrock.
Cole, the older brother of former Southend United winger Mitchell, made his name with Dagenham and Redbridge at the highest level of the non-league game, playing more than 300 games and scoring 30 goals in more than a decade at Victoria Road.
The 31-year-old, who captained the Daggers, was also named as player-of-the-year three times.
And Broom was pleased to bring Cole, who spent a loan spell at Blunts Wall Road in 2002, back to Town.
"This is a signing we've been working on for a number of weeks and I'm delighted that it's finally been sealed," said the joint-manager.
"Tim is a tremendous defender, a real inspiration. He's good in the air and on the ground and is a great organiser.
"I'm sure he'll prove to be a major acquisition for us and play an important part as we push for at least a place in the play-offs this season."
And Cole was joined by another new face on Sunday when AFC Wimbledon forward Steven Ferguson made the switch to Essex.
The former Tottenham Hotspur, Motherwell and Woking man, 26, is a speedy player who can play either out wide or up front.
The pair's arrival means Town will have at least four new names in their line-up when the Ryman Premier season gets underway, having already snapped up highly-rated East Thurrock United left-back Ashley Dumas and winger Dave Wareham, who has returned after a short spell with Heybridge Swifts.
Town missed out on promotion from the Ryman League Premier Division for the second straight season last term.
