Dan heads home to Wakering
GREAT Wakering Rovers have pulled off a major pre-season coup by re-signing Dan Trenkel from local rivals Concord Rangers.
"Trenks" captained the Thames Road side last season when they pulled off a superb Essex Senior League double by winning the championship and Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy.
They also enjoyed a fine run through to the quarter-finals of the FA Vase and their Senior League title win earned them promotion to play alongside Rovers in Ryman Division One North this coming campaign.
Trenkel first signed for village side Wakering in February 2001 as a 17-year-old following some great performances in the club's youth team.
He went on to make more than 100 first team appearances and was given a long trial with Southend United.
A versatile player who can fill a striking or midfield role, Trenkel returned to Burroughs Park, but at the start of the 2005-06 season left for Senior League Burnham Ramblers.
Last season he was a major figure in Concord's outstanding success.
And now his return to his home base for next season has delighted Wakering boss Iain O'Connell.
He said: "The return of Dan, along with other signings such as top quality goalkeeper Richard McKinney, emphasises that we're hoping to have a real go for a play-off place this season.
"We've established ourselves in Ryman One North with mid-table finishes in the last two campaigns and now I want us to take the next step up.
"With no disrespect to opposition sides, I do not think that this division is going to be as strong as it has been over the last couple of years and I believe we'll have the quality to be involved in the promotion mix."
O'Connell has lost Sam Clarke to AFC Sudbury and fellow midfielder James White is to have a trial with Premier Division Dartford.
Striker Martin Tuohy is re-joining East Thurrock United, who have been relegated to Division One North.
On the plus side, outstanding midfielder Ben Hudson has joined the Wakering camp from Essex Senior League Southend Manor and O'Connell has high hopes of one more major arrival in the shape of a quality defender.
